Election nominations open

Jul 20, 2010

Nominations for the 2010 Queenstown Lakes District Council elections open this Friday (23 July), QLDC electoral officer Jane Robertson said.

A second candidate session would be held at Queenstown tomorrow (Wednesday) evening (a session was held at Wanaka last night attended by more than 20 potential candidates), she said.

“Information, including nomination forms, is now readily available on the council website or at a council office,” Ms Robertson said.

Checking out the elections page or attending a public council or community board meeting was a good way to get a feel for what the council did, she said.

The only criteria to be an elected member was a commitment to serve the community.

“In practical terms individuals do need to be a New Zealand citizen and enrolled on the parliamentary electoral roll,” she said.

The jobs of Councillor and Wanaka Community Board Members were not insignificant.

“It’s a big job, demanding at times but extremely rewarding,’ Ms Robertson said.

Nominations, which must be supported by two nominees, also required a deposit of $200.

Nominations closed at noon on 20 August 2010.
