Comment is being sought from the community about a proposal to develop the Kelly’s Flat Reserve in Wanaka into junior soccer grounds, QLDC parks manager Gordon Bailey said.

The reserve, situated on Aubrey Road, is adjacent to Wanaka Primary School and opposite Holy Cross Primary.

Mr Bailey said the idea for the proposed soccer grounds arose from consultation that took place in Wanaka in 2008 around sites for sporting facilities and is intended to be complementary to the proposed Wanaka Sports Facility at Three Parks.

“Kelly’s Flat was identified during that process as having potential for use as a sports ground, “he said. “We’ve talked to the soccer club about their needs and now it’s time to find out how the wider community feels,” he said.

A draft layout plan for the site had been drawn up including four pitches, 30 angled car parks and toilets. A pop up irrigation system would also be installed. A budget of $500,000 had been set aside for the proposed work.

Mr Bailey said the site was ideally situated.

“It’s handy to schools and easy to get to and from,” he said. “It’s also relatively flat so wouldn’t require much levelling work.”

“Ultimately it seems like a good fit and we’d like to hear what everybody thinks about this proposal before it goes before the Wanaka Community Board for its consideration.”

A drop in session was being held where people could come along, ask questions and make comments on Monday 26 November 5pm – 6pm in the Faulks Room at the Lake Wanaka Centre.

Copies of the proposed layout plan are available from all Council offices and libraries and can also be downloaded from the website www.qldc.govt.nz

Feedback can be emailed to services@qldc.govt.nz or posted to Community Services, QLDC, Private Bag 50072, Queenstown. All feedback needs to be received by Friday 30 November.
