Macetown access affected by washout

Macetown Track before pipe shut down 8nov15

The main walking track from Arrowtown to Macetown has been washed out by a burst water pipe overnight on Saturday, and the 4WD track to Macetown is also affected.

The pipeline is owned by the Arrow Irrigation Company and the water was shut down within a few hours of the problem being reported to the Queenstown Lakes District Council by an early morning runner.

An initial inspection by Council engineers and contractors confirmed that a section of the path above the pipeline had fallen away, and the vehicle track below was at risk of further slumps and slips.

The area is about 500m from the start of the track in Arrowtown.

Any vehicles which were at Macetown overnight would be able to drive out via the riverbed but because of the risk of further slips, no other traffic will be able to pass through the washed out area until it has been fully assessed and repaired.

The Council has put signage and warning tape in place.

Walkers or mountainbikers will be able to use one of the alternative tracks to Macetown until the area of the washout is repaired.
