Irrigation restrictions will be in force at Lake Hayes, Lake Hayes Estate and Shotover Country from 5pm tonight.

The continuing hot weather and low rainfall have coincided with peak demand on the Lake Hayes water supply, and QLDC has placed signage in all three communities to remind residents of the need to conserve water by reducing irrigation.

There are three simple rules:

• No irrigation at all between midday and midnight.
• Sprinklers and irrigators with timers fitted may be used for 30 minutes between midnight and 6am.
• Hand-held hoses may be used between 6am and midday, provided they are being held at all times.

Watering lawns and gardens uses more water than any other domestic activity. On average, a sprinkler uses 1300 litres an hour, and a hand-held hose uses on average 400 litres an hour.

Water evaporates quickly in the heat of the day, so it’s much more efficient to water overnight or in the early morning.
