Withdrawal of Candidate
- Date:
- Sep 13, 2004
The Queenstown Lakes District Council and 2004 local body election candidate Phillip John Dunstan today (Monday) announced Mr Dunstan's withdrawal from the election.
Among other business interests Mr Dunstan holds shares and directorships in Council contractors Lakes Contract Services, Scope Resources and Imtech.
Mr Dunstan had originally made inquiries to the Office of the Auditor General before allowing his name to go forward. After receiving further information from the Auditor General, and Council's solicitors, the Council's CEO, Duncan Field, and Mr. Dunstan met today.
"The risk of my being challenged if successfully elected is such that I believe it is more appropriate for me to withdraw" Mr Dunstan said.
"Much of the uncertainty arises from the Local Authorities (Members Interests) Act 1968" Mr Field said. "This Act is 'well past its use-by date' and needs an urgent review" he said.
The former Civil Defence controller, emergency response co-ordinator, and principal rural fire officer has played a significant role, often voluntary, in the district over the past twelve years, Mr. Field said.
"Whilst Mr. Dunstan is unable to take up office at this time, I hope he will continue to play a valuable role in our community" Mr Field said.
The announcement of Mr Dunstan's withdrawal has arrived in time for his name to be removed from the ballot papers.
