Jet Boat Driver Avoids Prosecution

Date:
Oct 19, 2004

The Queenstown Lakes District Council was satisfied that a jet boat driver involved in a serious accident on Lake Wanaka in April, had accepted responsibility, harbourmaster Marty Black said.

The young man had failed to keep a proper look out when operating the jet boat in shallow water.

"The boat went through a partially submerged farm fence causing serious facial injuries to the passenger," Mr Black said.

The incident had been considered under the Council's Queenstown Lakes District Waterways Navigation and Safety Bylaw 2003.

"We have decided not to pursue prosecution in this case, however it is pleasing to note that the young man concerned has agreed to make a substantial donation to the Lakes District Air Rescue Trust and complete a course in boat safety," Mr Black said.

The incident had proved a shocking reminder for the young man that a moment's inattention could lead to a lot of unnecessary grief.

"It's a timely reminder for all boaties looking forward to the coming summer that safety should be a prime consideration at all times," Mr Black said.

In deference to the driver's age and the decision not to prosecute, the Council had chosen to withhold any further driver details.
