Two new entrance signs to Wanaka are set for a big reveal in July, Wanaka Community Board Chairman and Queenstown Lakes District Council Deputy Mayor Lyal Cocks said.

The signs, which are currently under construction, would be located on the north side of the state highway just before Puzzling World, and on the west side of Cardrona Valley Road adjacent to Oakridge Resort.

“Without giving too much away I can confirm that the signs will feature schist stone and metal and will be a real feature at the entranceways to Wanaka,” Mr Cocks said.

The new signage was the result of research, debate and design by a small working group with representatives from the Wanaka Residents Association, Upper Clutha – Wanaka Lions Club, Rotary Club of Wanaka, Lake Wanaka Tourism and the Wanaka Community Board.

The cost of the signs was approximately $10,000 with half the funding contributed by the Lions, Rotary and the Wanaka Residents Association and half funded by QLDC.

“We worked to the criteria of classy, simple and relevant,” said working group member Tony Brown.  “The final design meets the criteria, but also has a unique addition,” he said.

Construction of the signs begins next week and the signs will stay under wraps until the official unveiling in July.

“This is an excellent example of the community board and community organisations working together to get a long-considered project brought to fruition reasonably quickly,” said Mr Cocks.
