Eligible voters in the Queenstown Lakes District Council Wakatipu Ward by-election have only hours left to make their vote count.
As of Friday (June 17) only 33 percent of voters had filed their papers. The by-election closed at midday on Wednesday.
"This election is as important as the last full council election. People do need to vote," QLDC Mayor Clive Geddes said.
A good range of candidates had put their hand up for the role, which Mr Geddes described as an onerous task.
"These individuals have stepped up and now it's the community's opportunity to engage in this process. It's the sign of a healthy community if it is taking an interest," Mr Geddes said.
He recommended people found their voting papers, read the accompanying statements and cast their vote.
Then you will need to take that vote and deliver it to the Council before noon on Wednesday.
People that failed to exercise this basic right effectively vetoed their right to have an opinion.
"If you don't vote, you can't complain," Mr Geddes said.
The council was looking forward to operating again at full strength, he said.
"There has been a lot of pressure on the other councillors. With two resignations to contend with, this council has endured being under strength collectively for some 18 months," Mr Geddes said.
The council hoped to be in a position to announce an interim result on Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning.
