Frankton Track users are being advised to expect delays during the next month as work gets underway on a large scale maintenance and improvement programme.

The work, which will affect the area from the Frankton Marina to Park Street involves tree felling and track resurfacing and temporary closures will be required to allow the work to proceed safely.

Queenstown Lakes District Council general manager community services Paul Wilson said track users might prefer to divert to Frankton Road for the next few weeks.

“Council is taking the opportunity to undertake this work during the quietest month on the Frankton Track so we can minimise disruption to track users,” he said.

Traffic management would be in place with delays expected to last for up to 15 minutes to allow for tree felling and also for the movement of vehicles involved in the track resurfacing and grade improvements work in the area between Villa del Lago and The Oaks.

The wilding and unstable trees removed during the work would be replaced by over 1000 beech trees and other native plants suited to the area. The track upgrading would also result in the elimination of a short, steep section of the track which was difficult for less able bodied track users to negotiate.
