Review of District Reprensentation to Commence

Date:
Sep 9, 2005

The Queenstown Lakes District Council working party established to undertake a ward review is set to get underway, QLDC District Secretary and project manager Jo Schmelz said.

The Council recently resolved to appoint a working party made up of Mayor Clive Geddes, Devon Hotop of Wanaka, Jim Ryan of Arrowtown, Rachel Brown of Hawea and independent chairman John Matthews.

The group, which has full delegated authority to review the electoral arrangements for the district, was selected after expressions of interest were called for from the community.

"There is a lot of work ahead in complying with the legislative requirements and the group is looking forward to getting under way," Miss Schmelz said.

Among the matters to be considered were the fair and effective representation arrangements for the communities of interest within the district.  This would include a review of current ward arrangements, community board efficiency, and the election of councillors and the Mayor at large or by ward for the period 2007 - 2013.

The proposition that the working party comes up with will then be presented back to the Council and the community for adoption and ultimately ratification by the Local Government Commission.

"It is a wonderful opportunity for all communities to review whether or not they are being adequately represented by elected members," Miss Schmelz said.

There would be plenty of opportunity for the community to be involved and be consulted with on the matters within the terms of reference for the project.

"I would urge everyone, particularly, our community associations, to really think about whether or not current representation arrangements are fair."
