The continuing practice of disposing of paint and chemicals directly into the Queenstown Lakes District stormwater system is now likely to end in prosecution, QLDC chief executive Duncan Field said.

"Time and again we are seeing contractors dumping chemical paint into the stormwater system. Important and delicate eco systems like Queenstown's Horne Creek are constantly coming under attack," Mr Field said.

The latest incident, which occurred yesterday, saw a white substance pour into Horne Creek, home to brown and rainbow trout.

"On this occasion, two painting sites were visited but no evidence was able to be found. I have instructed our contractors to keep a watchful eye on the situation," Mr Field said.

The Council and the community were fed up with the number of incidents occurring, he said.

"Ignorance is not an excuse. Previously we have been open to offering diversion but clearly the message is not getting through. From now on perpetrators can expect a tougher stance. If you get caught, you are likely to face prosecution," Mr Field said.

The community were also asked to report any incident of stormwater dumping.

"If you have any kind of contract work going on in your neighbourhood then keep a watchful eye. If you see anyone pouring anything into the stormwater system then please call the Council immediately. We rely on the community to help us protect our precious resources," Mr Field.
