Aquatic Centre - Building Next Month
- Date:
- Aug 22, 2006
The Queenstown Aquatic Centre could be in construction by next month, Queenstown Lakes District Council chief executive Duncan Field said.
Building consent, which had been delayed due to a now resolved fire design issue, was granted last week.
"That's the last consent required, which means subject to final costings, work can begin," Mr Field said.
It was anticipated the final costing would increase on the budget of $14.2 million set back in September 2005.
"We all have to be mindful of inflation and other hidden costs in a project of this magnitude. That's the reality. The price can shift, simply according to the exchange rate." Mr Field said.
Pool liners, tiles, insulated panels, pvc pipe and pumps were all imported items.
A value engineering workshop was scheduled for the end of the month to address the final budget.
"We need to make sure that Councillors are comfortable with the final budget then I think we're all looking forward to commencing construction, that might only be a matter of weeks away," Mr Field said.
If the project did commence next month, it was hoped the Frankton-based centre would be completed and opened by December, next year (2007).
