Small Communities Choose Recycling Options
- Date:
- Aug 1, 2007
Consultation with the communities of Kingston and Glenorchy has resulted in community choices over recycling options for those towns.
"We identified the three possible options for each community, kerbside recycling, recycling collection points or both," Queenstown Lakes District Council acting solid waste manager Dr Linda Wright said.
In Kingston 42 of the 105 respondents opted for a kerbside recycling service, with 31 choosing a collection point and 32 opting for both.
The Glenorchy response was almost equally split between all three options.
"We had 56 responses, with 18 favouring kerbside, 19 favouring a collection point and 19 keen for both," Dr Wright said.
Both towns would be given a kerbside recycling service once the service got underway later in the year, however due to the close nature of the feedback, the Glenorchy service would be reviewed after a relatively short period of delivery.
"We want to make sure that the service being delivered is the one that best fits the community," Dr Wright said.
Meanwhile kerbside recycling for the Wakatipu Basin, including Glenorchy, Kingston, Gibbston and Arrowtown was still on target for an October start.
"Progress on the construction of the recycling centre at Frankton is well underway, the truck livery has been confirmed and 8,500 new recycling wheelie bins have been ordered," Dr Wright said.
